Fallout: Wasteland Warfare

What is Fallout: Wasteland Warfare?

Fallout: Wasteland Warfare is a narrative-driven skirmish game set in the iconic post-apocalyptic Fallout universe. You’ll build small warbands—Survivors, Super Mutants, Brotherhood of Steel, and more—and send them into the Wasteland to scavenge, survive, and complete missions. It supports solo, co-op, and versus play, which makes it super flexible, and the gameplay really captures that Fallout feel: a mix of tactical combat, moral choices, and old-world weirdness.

What really makes it shine is the number of ways to play; PvP, solo and cooperative. Between battles, you upgrade your gear, grow your settlement, and carry your warband’s story forward. It’s not about giant armies—it’s about gritty, personal stories told through dice, models, and awesome terrain. If you’re a fan of Fallout or love narrative miniatures games, this one’s absolutely worth checking out.

What do I need to play?

RULEBOOKS

The core rules are totally free, available for download from Modiphius. I also highly suggest the FO:WW App. This organizes all the game information in a super convenient way!

DICE/MEASURING TOOLS

Fallout: Wasteland Warfare uses proprietary dice, special D20’s. In addition, the game uses a series of measuring tools instead of traditional movement with a measuring tape.

MINIATURES

Modphius designs stunning miniatures that really bring the game to life. Grab what you love, and the starter set… then you are ready to tackle the wastes!

MAIN FACTIONS

Tech-worshipping warriors clad in power armor, the Brotherhood seeks to recover and control pre-war technology at all costs. They’re heavily armored and disciplined, with elite troops and devastating firepower. On the battlefield, they’re a slow-moving juggernaut that hits hard and takes hits even harder.

Remnants of the old U.S. government, the Enclave believes in restoring America—just without the mutants or common folk. Their forces are elite, high-tech, and ruthless, fielding advanced armor and deadly weapons. Expect a small but brutally efficient strike force that feels like a precision scalpel in the Wasteland.

Ordinary people trying to scrape by, the Survivors are a mix of settlers, wanderers, and reluctant fighters. Their greatest strength is adaptability: a little stealth, some decent firepower, and lots of heart. They’re ideal for narrative play, offering tons of personality and flexibility in how you build them.

Chaotic, violent, and driven by greed, Raiders are the lawless scavengers of the Wasteland. They’re lightly armored but fast, aggressive, and packed with unpredictable tricks. Expect a scrappy, up-close faction that rewards bold plays and brutal ambushes.

Towering brutes forged in radiation, Super Mutants are tough, relentless, and devastating in close combat. They don’t do subtle—they smash, shoot, and shrug off damage like tanks. If you want raw power and a truly monstrous presence, these green giants deliver.

A mix of pre-war tech gone rogue or repurposed, the Robots faction includes everything from Mr. Handy to towering Sentry Bots. They’re durable, coldly efficient, and often operate independently or under AI protocols. It’s a mechanical swarm with no fear, no mercy, and lots of armor plating.

Fanatical, brutal, and militarized, Caesar’s Legion draws from Roman aesthetics and rules with iron discipline. They’re fast, deadly in melee, and rely on morale manipulation and overwhelming force. Playing them means charging headlong into battle with zeal and blades drawn.

NCR

The NCR is a democratic republic trying to bring order to the chaos—but often with military might and bureaucracy. Their forces are well-equipped and balanced, offering strong ranged support and solid tactical options. They represent structure and control in a world that rarely respects either.

How the game plays

Fallout: Wasteland Warfare is a narrative-focused skirmish game where small crews battle it out in the post-apocalypse. Players take turns activating their miniatures, rolling custom dice for combat and skill checks, and using terrain, cover, and gear to survive deadly encounters. The game supports solo, co-op, and versus play, with TTRPG-style campaigns that let you upgrade your crew, gather resources, and tell your own Fallout story over time.

THE BASICS OF DICE

  • Roll the White Skill dice.
  • Additionally, roll the dice listed on the weapon profile.
  • Add all those things together.
  • Roll equal to or below the relevant skill value.
  • Success!

There’s an app for that…

Modiphius supports a phone app for FO:WW, and it rocks. You can purchase digital versions of cards, or for $2 you can access it all with a subscription. Not only does the app act as a library for all the cards/ resources for the game, but also has a list builder, Battle Mode and campaign tracker.

LIST-BUILDING

This is the biggest point of friction for new players, in general. There are so many options, items, enhancements, weapons and game modes that Fallout: Wasteland Warfare has to offer that it can be overwhelming. To make things simple, I usually offer the following bits of advice:

List Tips For New Players

  • Start at 500 Caps, this is a good size game to have a variety of minis but not so many that it gets overwhelming.
  • Ignore Heroic character rules. Stick to simple loadouts with minimal rules to get going.
  • Add a character, give them a weapon that corresponds with their skills, and a piece of basic armor. Once you are comfortable with the basic rules, expand into things like chems, power armor, etc.
  • Have at least 1 character who likes to get into melee
  • This is another place where the app comes in super handy!

I did a series of videos introducing the basics of list-building, the app and more, check them out down below!

GAME MODES

PvP

Fallout Wasteland Warfare is a great PVP wargame to play with your buddies! An example is the Adepticon event called the Dirt Haven Dust-Up. Simply agree to a Caps limit and build a list from your faction. While the wasteland is full of madness, if everyone sticks to basic builds and consistent Scenarios then the game plays great.

Solo/ Co-op

This is (in my opinion) the best part of Fallout Wasteland Warfare, the option for cooperative play! Instead of viewing the game as a traditional PvP style (like Kill Team or Warcry), Fallout Wasteland Warfare can be played almost like a TTRPG. Build a party for you and your friends, use the AI to generate enemy actions and guide players through the rules like a DM. You can also play the game, campaign included, by yourself in the same manner!
